Kwon Ji-yong most commonly known as G-Dragon was born on August 18, 1988 in South Korea. G-Dragon started his career at age five as a member of the group Little Roora. After the group’s contract was terminated, SM Entertainment, one of South Korea’s largest entertainment companies, recruited the budding star. He trained with SM for almost five years before he moved on to YG Entertainment. After some time developing his work and paying his dues at YG, he was paired with another trainee, Dong Young-bae, with the intention of introducing the two as a hip-hop duo GDYB. The company scrapped the idea and decided to add three members to the pair to form the five-member boy band Big Bang. Big Bang debuted to moderate success in 2006 but it was only after G-Dragon started to produce and compose music for the band that they achieved their first number one single with the song “Lies”. From there Big Bang became one of the most successful boy bands in the world winning consecutive Artist of the Year Awards and selling over 140 million records making them the best-selling digital group of all time in Asia. In 2009 G-Dragon released his first solo album “Heartbreaker” with its lead single of the same name topping several charts. The album broke the record for most copies sold for a male solo artist that year and won Album of the Year at the 2009 Mnet Asian Music Awards. As a rapper and producer, G-Dragon has produced music and collaborated with several artists including Missy Elliot, Diplo and Skrillex. Described as a “genius singer-songwriter” by the Korea Times he has written twenty-two number one songs. In the summer of 2017, he will release his third solo album “Kwon Ji Yong” four years after his sophomore album “Coup D’Etat”.
